Rep. Waxman Requests Hearings on Controversial Terrorism Legislation

May 12, 2011 Issues: Foreign Affairs, Judiciary

Rep. Waxman and 32 of his colleagues have urged House Armed Services Committee Chairman McKeon to hold hearings to examine several troublesome provisions in the National Defense Authorization Act, which was approved by the Armed Services Committee on May 12th, 2011. These provisions, originally introduced as H.R. 968, the Detainee Security Act, would significantly expand authorization for the use of military force around the world without Congressional approval, undermine the ability of the FBI and local law enforcement to participate in counterterrorism operations, and prevent federal courts from conducting terrorism trials.
